Conferences & Workshops
Set against the charming hanseatic backdrop of Hamburg, renowned as the gateway to the world, the conference is scheduled from March 4 to 7, 2025. It will take place at the Audimax, a lecture hall building on the main campus of the Universität Hamburg, and is conveniently located close to the city center, the bustling harbor and plenty of other famous attractions Hamburg has to offer.
As usual, the annual GfV gathering serves as a hub for virologists delving into diverse aspects of viral infections – from basic research to veterinary, translational, and clinical virology. Building on the success of last year’s events, we are also committed to supporting young virologists by offering a platform through the “junge GfV”, which will host a dedicated jGfV session and a workshop organized by ACHIEVE, tailored to their needs.
Moreover, the program will feature keynote lectures delivered by world-renowned experts, an award ceremony honoring recipients of the society’s award winners, and numerous workshops for short oral presentations. During sessions, poster presentations, and social events, attendees will have plenty of time to (re)socialize, discuss and exchange innovative ideas.

We are cordially inviting you to join us in the wonderful old city of Dubrovnik for 2025 European Congress of Virology from 27 to 30 April 2025.
As always, ECV provides a unique opportunity for European virologists from all fields of virus research to present their work, exchange ideas and plan new exciting projects. Our Organizing and Scientific committees are busy preparing high quality and diverse programme.
The venue is Hotel Croatia located in a quaint and beautiful city of Cavtat, just 20 km from a world-famous UNESCO World heritage city of Dubrovnik. You will get to enjoy the wonderful Croatian Adriatic experience without the hustle and bustle of tourists flocking to Dubrovnik. Of course, Dubrovnik is just minutes away by car, bus or even a boat for an exciting night on the town. Dubrovnik boasts of a long and proud history dating back to the 7th century. It has one of the most preserved medieval city walls in the world, the world’s oldest arboretum (dating to 15th century) and the oldest European pharmacy still in operation (since 14th century). George Bernard Shaw exclaimed in 1929 “If you want to see heaven on earth, come to Dubrovnik.” If that is not enough to entice you to come, let us just say that Dubrovnik was the first Mediterranean port to require quarantine for people, animals and goods coming from locations with known infectious diseases epidemics. And the quarantine buildings (The Lazarettos of Dubrovnik) are still standing today!
The hotel Croatia itself is regularly a host to numerous international scientific meetings, and is located 5 minutes away from the Dubrovnik airport. We, ECV2025 organizers, have a history of successful international scientific meetings held in Hotel Croatia – most notable being NK2010, International Meeting of Society for Natural Immunity. We are excited and confident that 9th iteration of ECV will be as scientifically and socially stimulative as the past ones.
We look very much forward to welcoming you in Cavtat/Dubrovnik for the 9th European Congress of Virology.

Approximately 20% of all human cancer cases worldwide have been associated with infectious agents. This proportion is even higher in low-income countries, where, because of socioeconomic conditions, infections are more common and health-care surveillance is less available than in high-income countries. On the basis of a vast number of biological and epidemiological studies, the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) has classified seven viruses and one bacterium as human carcinogens: high-risk mucosal human papillomavirus (HPV) types, hepatitis C virus (HCV), hepatitis B virus (HBV), human T-cell lymphotropic virus type 1 (HTLV-1), Epstein–Barr virus (EBV), Kaposi sarcoma-associated herpesvirus (KSHV), HIV-1, and the bacterium Helicobacter pylori.
This conference a joint initiative of IARC and the German Cancer Research Center (Deutsches Krebsforschungszentrum; DKFZ), will mainly focus on discussion and critical evaluation of cellular transformation, epidemiology, immunology, vaccines, and virus-host interaction.
