Conferences & Workshops

This symposium will bring together scientists across academia, industry, and government to explore the biology of viral infection, antiviral immunity, and the urgent need for countermeasures against a range of viral pathogens. The meeting aims to spark interdisciplinary collaboration and the exchange of novel ideas in this rapidly evolving field, with a focus on viral immunology, pathogenesis, evolution, prevention, and treatment.

Sessions will cover topics such as host-virus interactions, host factors affecting susceptibility, species expansion of emerging pathogens, effective and ineffective innate and adaptive immune responses, immune-based therapies, and vaccine innovation. Special emphasis will be placed on host-directed and immune-based approaches, which are gaining momentum in the field. By bringing together virologists and immunologists to share both breakthroughs and challenges, this symposium will help drive forward the development of effective therapies and vaccines against both emerging and persistent viral threats.

This meeting will feature our People’s Choice Poster Award, an opportunity to highlight an outstanding poster presenter at this conference. Poster presenters will not only share their work with a global audience of peers and leaders but also have the chance to be recognized by attendees and win a free future conference registration! Poster presenters, who are not giving a short talk, are eligible to win, with one winner chosen by attendee votes.

Dear Colleagues and Friends,

It is with great enthusiasm that we extend a warm invitation to you for the 28th ESCV Annual Meeting, that will take place in the fascinating and vibrant city of Porto, Portugal, from September 16-19, 2026.

The ESCV Annual Meeting continues to be a landmark event in the field of Clinical Virology, growing in relevance and impact each year. In 2026 the 28th ESCV Annual Meeting promises to uphold the tradition of excellence, bringing together leading experts, researchers, and professionals to exchange insights, engage in meaningful discussions, and explore the latest advances in Clinical Virology.

The ESCV 2026 Scientific Committee is crafting an outstanding scientific program featuring keynote lectures by leading figures in virology, dynamic oral presentations — including the presentation of the prestigious ESCV Scientific Awards — and thought-provoking poster sessions

Attendees will also have the chance to explore cutting-edge diagnostic technologies and groundbreaking industry advancements in the field of Clinical Virology, showcased through industry-sponsored symposia.

Beyond the scientific sessions, Porto itself adds to the appeal of this gathering. As Portugal’s second-largest city, it blends rich history with modern sophistication, offering visitors an unparalleled cultural and social experience. The event venue, Super Bock Arena, located within a lively district close to the heart of the city, provides an ideal atmosphere for both knowledge-sharing and networking.

We eagerly anticipate welcoming you to Porto in September 16-19, 2026 and look forward to an enriching and inspiring conference together.

On behalf of our colleagues, we have the great pleasure to invite you to the 35th Annual Meeting of the Society of Virology (GfV). The meeting will be held in the Chemistry Lecture Center on the vibrant Life Science Campus of Heidelberg University from March 17th to 20th, 2026. We look forward to welcoming you in Heidelberg at this time.

As usual, the four-day conference will feature keynote lectures by leading experts, who will present the latest developments in virology, ranging from basic research to clinical virology and covering novel technologies. In line with its tradition, the GfV meeting will offer ample opportunities especially for young researchers to present themselves in the various thematic workshops and poster sessions, where all participants can discuss their results and exchange ideas in a most friendly and supportive atmosphere. In addition, the “junge GfV” will have a platform to present themselves. During the breaks, you will have the possibility to attend the industry exhibition. Last but not least, we are honored to welcome our colleagues from the Swedish Society of Virology, with whom we have entered into a collaboration.

Founded in 1386, Heidelberg University is Germany’s oldest university that has developed into a leading hub in Life Sciences. Beyond science, Heidelberg is one of Europe’s most beautiful towns well known for its romantic Castle overlooking the Neckar River, the historic Old Bridge, the Philosophers’ Walk and the Baroque old town.

We are sure that you will enjoy the Heidelberg GfV meeting and are very much looking forward to welcoming you in Heidelberg in 2026.

Merkel cell carcinoma (MCC) is a rare and highly aggressive neuroendocrine skin cancer. This scientific symposium will focus on the epidemiology, carcinogenesis, and management of MCC. The symposium will include a Keynote presentation on Merkel cell polyomavirus from Dr. Yuan Chang (UPMC Department of Pathology), who discovered the virus together with her collaborator Dr. Patrick Moore in 2008. Other presentations will be from leaders in the field and selected abstracts and will emphasize new, unpublished work. Topics will span the range from foundational science to translational studies to clinical trials. Roundtable / debate-style discussions will be centered on pressing questions in the field including how best to address immunotherapy resistance, the relevance of viral integration and transcription in driving clinical outcomes, and the future of molecularly-targeted and orthogonal immunotherapeutic approaches. Registration is open to physicians, health professionals, scientists, and trainees in academia and industry. Patients and patient advocates are highly encouraged to attend.

Upon completion of this activity, participants will be able to:

  • Identify challenges and knowledge gaps in MCC research.
  • Assess opportunities to improve the understanding of MCC biology, pathogenesis, and therapy.
  • Use networking among MCC researchers, clinicians, and patient advocates for the benefit of the patient community.
  • Apply strategies to improve interest and engagement in the MCC research community and patient care environments.
